Torti Gallas partnered with George Mason University and the Bureau of Good Roads to receive a Vision Zero Grant from the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT). Vision Zero is an initiative to reduce, and ultimately eliminate, transportation fatalities of any kind in the District. The team worked with DC Public Schools (DCPS) to involve educators, 2nd grade students, and other key stakeholders in the design process for traffic gardens at two elementary schools in Ward 7 - Aiton Elementary and Neval Thomas Elementary.
The scope of the grant included student concept design workshops, design development of the two Traffic Gardens, a ‘kit of parts’ to be used for additional DCPS traffic gardens, and a traffic garden curriculum created by George Mason University to be used by the Pre-K Program.
